Iran’s Mohammad Javad Zarif, who is staying in Istanbul to meet some senior Turkish officials, met and talked with the Foreign Minister of Turkey Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu discussing bilateral issues as well as regional developments.
The Turkish FM welcomed his Iranian counterpart pointing to the successful visit of Turkish prime minister to Tehran; “similar trips lead to expansion of mutual cooperation between the two countries.”
Çavuşoğlu called for boosting economic ties to achieve the target of $30 billion for the trade turnover between the two sides voicing hope that the next meeting of Iran-Turkey Joint Commission will be held successfully.
The official also urged strengthening of tourism ties touching upon the interest of Turkish citizens to travel to Iran; “terrorism remains the common threat in both countries which should be used as the pivot to expansion of collaboration between Iran and Turkey.”
Mohammad Javad Zarif, for his part, emphasized the high importance of ties with Turkey as Iran’s good neighbor saying “we would like to launch best relations with Turkey as in the past since they have been on the side of Iran in difficult times.”
“Good dialogue was conducted between the two countries on bilateral and regional issues during the fruitful visit to Tehran by Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu,” underlined Zarif stressing that the dialogues will continue in the current visit.
The Iranian FM further highlighted the existence of an agreement between Iran and Turkey with regard to the need to preserve the territorial integrity of Iraq and Syria.
At the end of his remarks, Zarif enumerated other venues for expansion of bilateral ties and common interests of the two parties including strengthening of consular and judicial cooperation, increasing banking relationships, collaboration on energy (power, oil and gas) as well as holding a joint commission on transportation.
