With the aim to establish a framework that reflects Iran and the E3/EU+3’s strong commitment to the modernization project of Arak heavy water reactor, the sides have signed an official document which confirms a number of commitments to ensure that the modernization project should commence according to the agreed framework.
The document has been signed by Iran, China, France, Germany, Russia, UK, US, together with the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini. Some of the commitments mentioned in the document are:
1. Iran will take the leadership role as the owner and project manager of the Arak modernization project.
2. The E3/EU+3 will engage in a range of collaborative activities in support of the Arak modernization project, including reactor design, fuel development, safety and spent fuel management among others.
3. The Working Group participants commit to provide assistance in the design and construction of the modernized reactor or other responsibilities as designated for them.
4. An international partnership composed of Iran and the Working Group will implement the Arak modernization project.
5. Nothing in this Official Document modifies the JCPOA in any way.
