Iran’s pavilion at Expo Milan inspired by traditional Sofreh

TEHRAN, Mar. 17 (MNA) – Iran’s Tourism deputy has announced the country will participate in Expo Milan 2015 in a pavilion designed based on the Iranian Sofreh - a ceremonious tablecloth.

Morteza Rahmani Movahed, Tourism deputy of the Cultural Heritage Organization said Expo Milan 2015 is a global, cultural, educational and scientific event which gathers countries, organizations and communities in one place to showcase the best of their technology.

He maintained that with an expected 20 million visitors to the 1.1 million square meters of exhibition area, Expo Milan could serve as a significant opportunity to attract all the more foreign tourists to the country.

According to him, Iran’s pavilion for the event is 1,950 square meters, constructed on two levels and inspired by the concept of Iranian Sofreh (the square piece of fabric –a ceremonious tablecloth– which identifies a set table and is one of the most important objects in Iranian culture,) and elements of Iranian architecture such as mirror work and the windcatchers in Yazd. The upper level of the pavilion serves as an exhibition space divided into the seven climatic regions of Iran. The lower level is reserved for local products and cuisine of Iran, along with services required for expo reception and information.

Expo Milano 2015 is the Universal Exhibition that Milan, Italy, will host from May 1 to October 31, 2015. Over this six-month period, Milan will become a global showcase where more than 140 participating countries will show the best of their technology that offers a concrete answer to a vital need: being able to guarantee healthy, safe and sufficient food for everyone, while respecting the Planet and its equilibrium.
