AICS To Honor Avant-Garde Filmmakers

TEHRAN, July 24 (MNA) -- Azad Iranian Cineastes Society (AICS) plans to honor four pioneers of the Iranian motion picture industry during 4-days of ceremonies beginning July 26 in Tehran, the public relations office of the society announced on Saturday.

AICS will honor Nasser Taqva’i, Parviz Kimiyavi, Mas’ud Kimiya’i, and Dariush Mehrju’i at the society’s Beethoven Hall.

The first day of the ceremony will pay homage to 53-year-old director Nasser Taqva’i. Beginning his movie career at 23, Taqva’i produced his first feature-length film simultaneously with several other Iranian directors of his generation in 1968, creating a new wave in Iranian cinema.

Taqva’i’s "Captain Khorshid" was awarded the Bronze Leopard at the Locarno International Film Festival in 1987.

In addition to feature movies, Taqva’i has produced many outstanding documentaries and short films. His short film "Freedom" won a golden lion in the Venice Film Festival in 1972.

A graduate of Louis Lumiere School of Cinematography Parviz Kimiyavi is another Iranian cineaste being extolled at the ceremony. Sixty-five years old Kimiyavi has made documentary, fictional, short and feature films in Iran as well as in France. His work has gained critical success with the winning of several awards at important international festivals in Berlin, Cannes, Monte Carlo, and Montreal.

Mas’ud Kimia’i, 63, is undoubtedly one of the most successful and influential filmmakers in Iranian cinema. His works are widely acclaimed by critics and moviegoers.

AICS will also laud UCLA graduate, 65 years-old Dariush Mehrju’i, at the ceremony. His “The Cow” (1969) gave him a national and international reputation. It is one of the films that signaled the emergence of new Iranian cinema. The film participated in the 1971 Venice Film Festival bringing home the Critics' Award as the first internationally awarded film from Iran.

Mehrju’i’s “Mom’s Guest” is playing on Iranian screens now.
