Iran, Russia important players in Caspian Sea: diplomat

TEHRAN, Jan. 17 (MNA) – Iran and Russia play an important role in issues pertaining to the Caspian Sea, Mehdi Akhoundzadeh, deputy foreign minister for legal and international affairs said in Moscow on Monday.

Akhoundzadeh made the remarks in a meeting with Russian special envoy for Caspian Sea affairs Alexander Golovin.

The two sides underscored the important role Iran and Russia play in determining the legal regime of the Caspian Sea.

Akhoundzadeh said a great deal of agreements in different areas have been signed between the Caspian Sea littoral states.

He also expressed hope that the security in the Caspian Sea would improve through close cooperation between the littoral states.

For his part, Golovin said an expansion of ties between Iran and Russia, particularly on issues related to the Caspian Sea, is highly important.

He also called for speeding up efforts to determine the legal regime of Caspian Sea.

Akhoundzadeh was scheduled to meet with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov to discuss bilateral issues.
