“Bijan and Manijeh” love story to be staged in Tehran

TEHRAN, July 21 (MNA) -- Tehran’s Niavaran Cultural Center will be playing host to a theater troupe, which is scheduled to perform “Bijan and Manijeh” from July 29 to August 27.

The play will be directed by Rasul Najafian, who wrote the play based on the Bijan and Manijeh story in Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh. He is also the stage designer for the performance.

Hadi Farshchi and Samira Hassanpur will play Bijan and Manijeh respectively. Shahram Nejati, Kambiz Banan, Mohammad Golguni, Behruz Enayati, Asghar Shariati, and Payam Amir Abdollahiana are other members of the troupe.

In his play, Najafian also plans to use Naqqali, a style of storytelling dedicated to epic stories from Shahnameh. A morshed (mentor) will stage the Naqqali with music performed live by an ensemble.

The Naqqali will be performed based on 22 paintings depicting scenes from the Bijan and Manijeh story in Shahnameh.

The troupe is also scheduled to stage “Bijan and Manijeh” for three nights on the sidelines of the 13th Mobarak International Puppet Theater Festival, which opens tomorrow in Tehran.
