Former IAA secretary shares memories in first photo exhibit

TEHRAN, June 1 (MNA) -- Recently-resigned secretary of the Iranian Academy of Arts (IAA) Bahman Namvar-Motlaq considers photography a sort of recollection of memories which he can share with others.

“Photography is a longtime interest of mine. When I returned to Iran from Europe after the Iran-Iraq (1980-1988) war, I made serious plans for a number of brief journeys to visit different locations in Iran,” artist, researcher and photographer Namvar-Motlaq told the Persian service of MNA at his landscape photo exhibit at Tehran’s Bahman Cultural Center.

Bahman Namvar-Motlaq resigned last week. This time, his resignation was accepted by IAA director Ali Mo’allem Damghani. He said that he resigned to follow academic pursuits.

“It has been almost 10 years since I began taking these trips. There are so many beautiful locations in Iran; it made me think of pursuing photography seriously.”

Namvar-Motlaq believes photography is a kind of creation of new images, “I don’t consider photography a mere art form to record memoirs, rather I believe photos give us an opportunity to look at nature in a different way.”

At the present time, photography has given the artist additional motivation to search for and visit new locations across the country.

“Photography is a sort of recollection of memoirs. So I decided to share it with others. I occasionally show my works to my friends and they have encouraged me to continue. In those years when I was busy with my books and articles, I felt upset so I decided to express my feelings and share them with others. With the help of the photos, I was better able to communicate my feelings,” he explained.

“When I see scenes and landscapes which convey the ideas I have in mind, I quickly capture them with my camera and that is why my exhibit is called ‘Palkaneh’. (palkaneh is a small door in a wall through which one can discretely watch what is happening outside).”

The artist admits he has an interest in painting and music and hopes to continue pursuing what he enjoys in the future.

Solitude, roads and several more topics are other concepts the artist would like to focus on for his next exhibits.

A selection of 40 photos by the artist has been put on display at Bahman Cultural Center located on Bahman Square, in southern Tehran.
