Gharibian stated, “I always like working with people with undiscovered potential. I have had some bad experiences in this regard, but I have also had some good ones such as “Dancing in the Mist.” I am not used to everyday pleasantries, but I must say that I accepted the script on the first day that it was presented due to the fact that it was different. Although my part was not a long one in the movie, I accepted it because it was an important role in the story. At the same time I talked with Farhadi and realized that he is well acquainted with experts and has good ideas. This was why I began my work immediately. In my second experience with this director in the movie “
Gharibian added that he is unhappy about the way that the film is being shown. “When they show a film to a limited audience they damage the film from the beginning. What many regular people think is that if this is a good film why are they showing it to a limited audience and are not publicizing it. This is the result of unclear actions in the distribution department. This issue has haunted cinema from the first day of the new distribution policies set by cinema owners. Today it is the owner of the cinema who determines the destiny and course of cinema. This is a mistake made by cinema managers and is very dangerous.”
“The movie “Dancing in the Mist” has been identified as a festival film yet it is actually an appealing film which can attract an audience. I am guilty for the type of presentation just like the director, distributor and producer. They did not think about finding a solution to properly release the movie. The fact that Farhang Cinema’s re-opening has been delayed is also because of the inappropriate release of the movie. This is a cinema which by its closing down greatly affects ticket sales. Only a person like Iraj Taqipour is brave enough to make such inexperienced movies. This sense of culture is adorable and must be supported. Despite the unkindness shown towards “Dancing in the Mist”, he made the movie “
Elaborating on the understanding he and his director had before their cooperation, “I am not a researcher. I use my senses in whatever I do and in the decisions I make. I hadn’t seen his work because I do not watch television and only made my decision upon reading the script and talking with the director.”
Commenting the common dream amongst actors to win an Academy Award, Gharibian stated that, “Winning the best actor award in the Moscow festival for my part in “Dancing in the Mist” was more valuable than an Oscar for me, for this festival is held amongst the films of the world while the Academy Awards is a festival for U.S. and British films. My dream has come true.”
Gharibian commented on the skill of the actor playing opposite him, “I received the energy I needed from his acting. He was a talented actor and caused me to believe that I wasn’t working with an amateur. I enjoyed working with him and would watch his acting even when I did not have a role.”
Regarding Farhadi’s capabilities, “It is enough to mention that half of the film is set in the desert and the director has been able to create quite impressing scenes by using decoupage. I do not consider myself to be a professional after directing three films yet I am sure that I was not capable of directing such a movie myself.”
Gharibian continued that it is difficult to remain steady in the field of acting and that some marginal rules and regulations are more important than the capabilities of the actor or actress. “In order to remain in the field of acting, the actor must proceed based upon his knowledge. I believe such roles will remain and this film will be recognized for a long time in the history of Iranian cinema. I believe that the movie “Dancing in the Mist” is ahead of its time and will have a serious impact on the Iranian cinema in the future.”
Regarding characters that belong to a certain generation and have a vague identification, Gharibian says, “I am of this generation and am proud of it. I always wanted to live and make friends this way yet was never successful in making such friends in my personal life. You know, everything is different with the characters of the 1970s’ generation. We enjoyed going to the cinema, cinema posters, cinema pictures and displays and even walking through streets with cinemas. For us, (the word) ‘Cinema’ had a special tone to it.”
Praising the interview as positive experience towards the end of the session he concluded, “This session at least made me understand that cinema is paid attention to in
