2136-meter Tohid tunnel opens in Tehran

TEHRAN, Feb. 1 (MNA) – Tohid tunnel, the longest city tunnel in Tehran, was opened on Monday morning as the biggest city construction project in the history of city management in Iran.

Tehran Mayor Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, a number of city councilors, MPs, and Tehrani citizens attended the opening ceremony.

Tehran Municipality constructed the immense tunnel at a cost of over $400 million to ease sluggish traffic flow in the heart of the city.

The 2136-meter long tunnel connects two major north-south highways namely Chamran and Navab in the bustling metropolis of Tehran.

The twin tunnel has three lanes on each side. It is ventilated by 70 jet fans and is monitored by smart systems.

This major traffic project was completed after 31 months of round-the-clock work by professional local engineers and workers.

The project was planned to be completed in 27 months, but it was delayed due to some unpredictable pitfalls such as hitting underground water canals and fall of earth.

The tunnel will increase average traffic speed, reduce fuel consumption, and decrease air and noise pollution.

Experts have estimated an annual saving of 26 million litters of gasoline and a 11,000-ton decrease in air pollutants with the operation of the tunnel.

Motorists who take this tunnel will circumvent Tohid Square, Azadi intersection, and Jomhouri Square, considerably cutting trip time.
