e But, unfortunately, there is no reliable statistics on the extent of women abuse in the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Passive abuse is covert, subtle and veiled. This includes victimization, ambiguity, neglect, spiritual, and intellectual abuse, which has increased greatly across the country. And lack of official figures has turned it into an uncontrollable violence.
Domestic violence occurs across the world, in all cultures worldwide and irrespective of economic status. People of all races, ethnicities, religions, genders, and classes can be perpetrators of domestic violence, however domestic violence is usually perpetrated by men.
In the United States, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics women are about six times as likely as men to experience intimate partner violence.
Spousal abuse occurs when a family member, partner or ex-partner attempts to physically or psychologically, economically, socially, or legally dominate the another. Spousal abuse refers to violence by one spouse against the other.
The latest research on domestic violence in Iran was conducted in 1383 (March 2004-March 2005) in 28 of the 32 provinces of the country, which showed that 66 percent of Iranian women have experienced at least one domestic violence in their lives.
The other survey conducted in 1381(March 2002-March 2003), showed that 40 percent of women surveyed in Tabriz Province were subject to physical abuse.
Research has shown that 30 percent of women, despite of being abused by their husbands, don’t feel safe to be interviewed.
The survey also showed that 5.8 percent of all female victims interviewed were illiterate and 39 percent had diploma or higher education degree.
Sociologist Majid Abhari put the blame of increase in domestic violence on the insufficient social and legal support for women in society and called for concerted effort to give women full and complete support to resolve the problem.
He also stressed the need for raising women’s awareness on their rights in prevention of spousal abuse.
