Trump, who last week announced a 100% tariff on all Chinese imports, acknowledged on Friday that such a measure would not be sustainable in the long run.
“It’s not sustainable, but that’s what the number is,” Trump told Fox Business Network. “They forced me to do that.”
The US President added that he believed things would “be fine” with China, saying he expected to meet Xi soon. “I think things will be fine with China,” Trump said. “We’re going to meet in two weeks.”
The statement comes amid a volatile few days of exchanges between the two countries. Last week, Trump had accused Beijing of trying to “hold the world captive” through new export controls on rare earth materials. Calling the move “sinister and hostile,” Trump had threatened to impose sweeping trade measures and said there was “no reason” to meet Xi at the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in South Korea.
