Avini was a giant of Iranian documentary filmmaking: Purahmad

TEHRAN, March 11 (MNA) -- Iranian director Kiumars Purahmad believes that documentarian Seyyed Morteza Avini (1947-1993) was a freethinker, which made him one of the giants of Iranian documentary filmmaking.

The Experimental and Documentary Film Center recently established the Avini Awards, which will be given to Iranian documentarians for the first time on April 9, which is the martyrdom anniversary of the writer and documentary filmmaker who chronicled the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war.

“Sacred Defense documentary filmmaking is indebted to Avini and it seems that the Avini Awards have been established to repay the debt,” Purahmad told the Mehr News Agency on Sunday.

“He was one of the distinguished and effective filmmakers of the war, whose works are still wonderful and are still used by other filmmakers nearly 14 years after his martyrdom,” he added.

Purahmad believes that the award should not be limited to films in line with Avini’s thought.

“Avini was freethinking and tolerated different and sometimes opposing thoughts. When he was in charge of the Sureh monthly as editor in chief, he published articles opposed to his views,” he explained.

Purahmad is the director of “Morteza and Us”, a documentary about Avini. His war-themed “The Night Bus” (2006) was screened at the 25th Fajr International Film Festival in Tehran last February.

Avini was killed by a landmine while making a documentary about soldiers from the former war fronts in southwestern Iran who were still listed as missing in action.

Avini became famous for “The Narration of Triumph”, a documentary series which aired regularly on IRIB in the first few years after the end of the war.

He also directed the 10-part series “A City in the Sky” and published many writings, which are held in high esteem in Iran.

Some of his team members died while filming in war zones.
