Minister says 1,200km of new roads will be ready by mid-March

TEHRAN, March 2 (MNA) – The building of around 1,200 kilometers of new roads across the country will become completed by the end of the current Iranian calendar year (March 20, 2007), said the minister of roads and transportation Friday.

Mohammad Rahmati expressed hope that the road building would continue.

Referring to the development of the nation’s rail transportation system, he added the building of 450km of railroad would be completed in the next Iranian year.

“We hope that the Isfahan-Shiraz railroad and the railroad that links Bam to Zahedan will finish soon,” the minister said.

With the funds allocated by the Majlis (Iran’s parliament), the underway road building and improvement projects in the province of Khorassan Razavi will be completed and the Khaf railroad project –linking the northeastern city to Herat in the neighboring Afghanistan - will finish in the near future, Rahmati added.

“Given the vast cultural, religious and social commonalities between Iran and Afghanistan, we are sure that the Khaf-Herat railroad will result in further development of border regions, he predicted.
