Iran’s women grab bronze at Asia Rugby Sevens Trophy 2023

TEHRAN, Nov. 05 (MNA) – Iranian 7-member women’s national rugby team gained the bronze medal by defeating Guam at the 2023 Asia Rugby Sevens Trophy held in Doha, Qatar.

Iran’s national rugby squad defeated Uzbekistan 31-12 and Qatar 22-0 in the first and second matches of the tournament.

In the third match, Iran lost the game against the UAE 17-0 but advanced to the semifinals as the second team from Group B after the UAE.

In the semi-final, Iran accepted defeat against India to face Guam.

Iranian athletes thrashed Guam 10-0 to stand in the third place of the sporting event for the first time in the history of women’s rugby.

The UAE and India stood in the first and second places respectively.

Also, Iran’s men's rugby squad stood in ninth place in Asia by defeating Iraq, Mongolia, and Jordan and losing the game to the UAE.

In the men’s category, India and Bahrain stood in the first and second places respectively.

The event's champion in the men's and women's categories qualifies for the Asian Series competitions that will be held next year and qualify for the 2027 Rugby Sevens World Cup.

The Asia Rugby Sevens Trophy for men's and women's kicked off on Friday. The two-day trophy is organized by the Qatar Rugby and Hockey Committee at the Al Ersal pitch in Onazia.
