Iran, world’s third largest ostrich breeder

TEHRAN, Sept. 13 (MNA) – Iran is third only to South Africa and China in the world for ostrich breeding.

Keyvan Niamanesh, the managing director of the largest ostrich farm told MNA on Wednesday that some 120,000 to 150,000 ostriches are annually raised in Iran.

He also explained that 4,000 tons of ostrich white meat is annually produced in Iran that can increase the protein per capita of Iranians.

“The price of one kilogram of ostrich white meat in the domestic market is fixed at Rls.90,000 to 150,000 while it goes for 13 Euro in the foreign markets,” he said, adding that the Iranian producers prefer to sell their products in the domestic markets.

“The production capacity of ostrich white meat is yet to touch the desired level for export. The growth rate of this industry can rise to a satisfactory level of forex inflow in the category of non-oil exports of Iran, if the government continues cooperation and prevents obstructionism.

“The meat, feather, skin, liver, bones and eggs of ostriches can be used in different industries, particularly in the dietary industry,” Niamanesh said in conclusion, noting that the price of every ostrich is between Rls. 3.5 million to Rls. 3.7 million.
