Webometrics Ranking (also called ‘The Ranking Web’) is published twice a year (in late January and June), covering more than 27,000 Higher Education Institutions worldwide.
According to Webometrics official website, there are four main indicators for ranking the universities. ‘Presence’ is the first indicator which reviews the size (or number of webpages) of the main web domain of the institution, and it has 5 percent weight. ‘Visibility’ is the next indicator with the significant 50 percent weight which considers number of external networks (subnets) which originate backlinks to the institution's webpages. The third indicator is ‘Transparency’ which studies the number of citations from top authors of each university. And the last indicator ‘Excellence’ looks into number of papers amongst the top 10% most cited in 26 disciplines between 2012 and 2016.
Eight Iranian Universities are among top 1000 in the Webometrics Ranking, Dehghani said, adding that Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Sharif University of Technology, Amirkabir University of Technology and Tarbiat Modares University are next top Iranian Universities in the ranking, attaining the ranks of 555, 594, 785 and 851 respectively.
