Iran slams escalation of Saudi-led coalition attacks on Yemen

TEHRAN, Jun. 27 (MNA) – Iran has strongly condemned the recent UAE and Saudi-led coalition airstrikes against non-military targets in various cities in Yemen, causing the death and injury of dozens of defenseless Yemeni people.

In a statement late Tuesday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Ghasemi voiced sympathy with the bereaved families of the victims of such inhumane and ruthless acts, saying that the escalation of airstrikes on residential areas, including Yemen’s northwestern province of Sa’ada and the attack on a bus carrying the displaced in the war-torn western province of Hudaida, shows Saudi-led coalition’s desperation and failure to achieve their goals in invading Yemen.

Yemen’s al-Masirah satellite television network reported on Tue. that a Saudi-led military coalition airstrikes on a bus carrying internally displaced persons (IDP) in Yemen’s western province of Hudaida, leading to the death of at least nine people and injury of a dozen others.

Ghasemi went on to express regret at the continuation of some Western countries’ armed support to Saudi Arabia and the further development of the Arab country’s arsenal, as well as a lack of serious measure to put a stop to the UAE and Saudi Arabia’s war crimes in Yemen.

The Iranian diplomat called on all international organizations and entities to stop Saudi Arabia and the UAE from continuing their crimes and massacre of the Yemeni people.

Ghasemi deemed the attacks on residential areas and civilian targets, as well as the denial of access to international relief organizations, in clear violation of the principles of humanitarian law, and called on the United Nations and effective countries in the Yemeni crisis to increase their efforts for putting an immediate stop to the attacks.

He further called for the adoption of necessary measures and decisions to ensure the safety and wellbeing of civilians in Yemen, particularly women and children.
