Iran ranks 11th in honey production in the world and the industry still has more room and potential to grow once all resources and capabilities are employed to this end.
Beekeeping has been one of the old occupations in the country since the old times and Sabalan, northwest Iran, is known worldwide for its high quality and organic honey. Moreover, honey production, as a side job, can be of agreeable earnings for rural population and industries. Beekeeping has also been recognized as an effective biological pesticide helping pollination in modern agriculture.
The total number of the existing modern and native beehive colonies in the country stands at 2,809,000, having 49,000 people involved in this industry with 168 cooperatives and 15 provincial unions registered in this business, Torkashvand added.
