Asian powerhouse Iran faced their North American counterparts Mexico in Margao on Tuesday and defeated them 2-1 to qualify for the quarterfinals. Mexico were the worst team in the group stage to qualify for the knockouts while Iran had enjoyed a good run in this tournament, beating Guinea (3-1), Germany (4-0) and Costa Rica (3-0) to top Group C.
Mohammad Sharifi (7- penalty kick), and Allahyar Sayyadmanesh (11) scored for Iran, while Mexico's single goal was scored by De La Rosa.
Vazquez of Mexico lunged into an early tackle inside the box, thus prompting the referee to give Iran a chance for a penalty kick. Sharifi stepped up to the spot and slotted it home, sending the keeper the wrong way. Sayyad then closed down the defender in the Mexico third and dinked the ball over the keeper's head, to double Iran's advantage.
Iran will next face Spain in the quarterfinals for the first time in their fourth appearance in the tournament. .
