Iran lands 34th in latest FIFA world rankings

TEHRAN, Oct. 16 (MNA) – Iran’s national football team has been placed in the 34th position in the world and 1st in Asia in the latest FIFA World Ranking.

The FIFA World Ranking is a ranking system for men's national teams in association football, currently led by Germany. The teams of the member nations of FIFA, football's world governing body, are ranked based on their game results with the most successful teams being ranked highest.

In the newest standings, the Iranian squad has lost nine stops dropping to the 34th position though Persian footballers are still the highest-ranking team in Asia.

Unlike previous editions of the World Cup, all pots will be determined by each national team's October 2017 FIFA World Ranking, with Pot 1 containing the highest-ranked teams, Pot 2 containing the next highest-ranked teams, and so on.

Accordingly, Iran’s national outfit will be placed in Pot 3 of the World Cup 2017 to be hosted by the Russian Federation.

The draw for the 2018 FIFA World Cup will take place on December 1, 2017 at the State Kremlin Palace in Moscow, Russia. It will determine the group in which each of the 32 qualified national teams will play in at the start of the tournament. The teams will be divided into four pots of eight, with one team selected from each pot to form a group.

In the latest rankings released by Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the top ten positions are occupied by national teams of Germany, Brazil, Portugal, Belgium, Poland, France, Spain, Chili and Peru respectively.

Among Asian teams, Iran ranks first with 784 points followed by Australia and Japan. In the new standings, Australia has jumped seven spots while Japan dropped four places.
