Male taekwondo squad atop WT President’s Cup

TEHRAN, Aug. 14 (MNA) – Iran’s taekwondo team managed to garner the title at World Taekwondo President's Cup-Asian Region in Men’s division while female fighters landed third overall.

The first edition of the three-day G-2 event took place in Universal Stadium in Tashkent of Uzbekistan where Iran’s male taekwondo practitioners stood on the first podium by offering stunning athletic performances and collecting nine medals.

Accordingly, taekwondo outfit of the country clinched four gold, one silver and four bronze medals to crest at the prestigious event with a total of 35 points. South Koreans occupied the second position with four golds and one silver racking 31 points. Moreover, having bagged three silver and three bronze trophies, host Uzbekistan stood in the third place.

Female Iranian contestants also secured two silver and two bronze medals to stand on the third podium with eight points. The title went to South Korea with six gold and three bronze medals while the Chinese team finished runner-up with one gold, two silvers and two bronzes.

Gold medalists of Iran comprised Ahmad Mohammadi, Ebrahim Safari, Soroush Ahmadi in addition to Mahdi Jalali. Meanwhile, Salar Vahidi claimed the country’s only silver medal. Four bronzes were also added to Iran’s medal tally by Sajad Mardani, Mohammdreza Hadian, Mahdi Eshaghi as well as Alireza Aliyari.

In Women’s division, Zahra Shojaei and Kiana Akhavan brought home two silvers while Soodabeh Poursadeghi and Fatemeh Madahi settled for bronze.

Iran had participated at the international taekwondo championship with a total of 24 taekwondo practitioners.

Athletes who earned medals at the 1st WT President’s Cup taekwondo championships were awarded with berths for 2018 Asian Taekwondo Championship to convene May 20-22 next year in Astana, Kazakhstan.

The 1st WTF President's Cup - Asian region was being held on August 11-13, 2017, in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
