Commercial Manager of Karoon Petrochemical Company Kazem Bastakian notified reporters on pilot production of methylene diphenyl diisocyanate, most often abbreviated as MDI, in his company saying “for the first time ever, Iran has joined the group of countries who produce the strategic petrochemical product.”
The official said following easing and later removal of international sanctions, Karoon petchem products, TDI (toluene diisocyanate) in particular, have been exported to various global markets including European, Asian and even South American ones; “accordingly, along with Albania, Greece, Russia, Italy and Sweden, petrochemicals of Karoon Company have been shipped to South American states like Peru and Uruguay.”
Several cargos of petrochemical products have been sent to Peru since the beginning of the current Iranian calendar year, he continued.
On economic justifiability of exports to South America given the huge distance, Bastakian stated that presently customers undertake transference of the purchased petrochemicals.
He recalled that isocyanate was being sold in barrels though it could change at the request of buyers.
“Given the type of vessels, the possibility exists for exports via ISO Tank containers upon which case customers will receive discounts for elimination of barrels,” he underscored.
He further touched upon the exports volume of isocyanate product explaining “over 7,000 tons of isocyanate were exported in the first seven months of the current Iranian calendar year (began March 20, 2016) though domestic sales have become a priority in the past two months.”
Kazem Bastakian referred to aniline as another major petrochemical produced and exported at Karoon Petrochemical Company with Indians as its largest customer; “aniline is a product of Karoon’s phase two and is consumed as feedstock in MDI unit.”
At the end of his remarks, the official reiterated that aniline cannot be generally exported in view of the domestic demand though a number of single-cargo shipments have been made and recently, an Indian firm has called for monthly purchase of 300 tons of aniline.
