Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab-African Affairs Hossein Jaberi Ansari made the call following his visit to Moscow on Friday where he held bilateral and trilateral meetings with his Russian counterpart Mikhail Bogdanov abd Turkish counterpart Ahmet Unal Cevikoz on the upcoming Astana meeting in the Kazakh capital.
The meeting is scheduled for 23 January where representatives from the Syrian government and opposition groups will sit down at the negotiating table observed by presidents of Iran, Turkey, Russia and the UN representative.
During the phone conversation with the Syrian deputy FM, the two sides stressed the need for continuation of talks and coordination between Iran and Syria for reaching a political solution for the crisis in the war-torn Arab country. The two officials also expressed hope for the success of the upcoming Syrian-Syrian talks in Astana.
