MNA reelected to Tech. Cmte. as Baku hosts 16th OANA summit

BAKU, Nov. 18 (MNA) – 16th General Assembly of Organization of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA) convened this morning in Azerbaijan's Capital Baku.

More than 40 members of the organization attended the meeting to launch another term of the organization for three years where new president, secretary general and different committee members were elected by the members.

With Azerbaijani national news and information agency Azertac having been elected as the rotating head of OANA in 2013, the presidency of the organization was also transferred to its Managing Director Aslan Aslanov. Meanwhile, the senior international correspondent and the news agency’s representative to Germany Vugar Seidov was elected as new secretary general of OANA by consensus of the general assembly.

Moreover, Russia’s TASS news agency, Turkey’s Anadulo, China’s Xinhua and South Korean Yonhap were elected as vice presidents of the organization. Executive Committee of the organization was elected for another term with no changes; IRNA from Iran, BNA from Bahrain, Vietnam’s VNA, Lebanon’s NNA, Australian Associated Press AAP, Japan’s Kyodo, Pakistan’s PTI and Malaysian Bernama news agency form the executive committee of the organization responsible for making decisions on procedures of the events.

Technical committee of OANA witnessed minor changes having Azertac and TASS as its news members along with Mehr News Agency from Iran, Montsame from Mongolia, Kuwait’s KUNA and Kazinform from Kazakhstan.

At the end of the 16th General Assembly meeting of OANA, with Yonhap as the only nominee to hold the OANA Presidency for term 2019-2022, the gathering voted for the Korean news agency to hold the next GA meeting in Seoul in 2019, the exact date and venue to be decided later.

An initiative of UNESCO, the Organization of Asia-Pacific News Agencies was founded in 1961 with the aim of expanding news exchange among regional news agencies. OANA`s members include 43 news agencies from 35 countries.
