Iran-Russia nuclear coop. to pursue peaceful uses

BUSHEHR, Sep. 10 (MNA) – Vice-President Es’haq Jahangiri said Sat. Iran’s cooperation with Russia will be aimed at peaceful nuclear energy, military industry and counterterrorism.

The senior Iranian official made the remarks at a ceremony for the construction of the second nuclear reactor, known as Bushehr-2, that took place at the site in southern Iran earlier on Saturday.

He went on to deem the construction of the new unit as indicative of Iran’s utilization of the results of the nuclear agreement as well as Russia’s commitment, as a member of the 5+1 countries, to the implementation of the deal.

Jahangiri also announced that the construction of the third nuclear reactor at the Bushehr power plant with Russia’s assistance will begin in 2018.

“At present, we have an installed capacity of over 75,000 MW at our power plants,” he said. “In current situation, we have a 6 per cent annual increase in electricity consumption which necessitates the construction of over 5,000 MW units per year.”

He went on to add, “Iran once again reiterates that commitment to JCPOA is subject to the implementation of obligations by all parties to the deal, among which is cooperation with Iran for uses of nuclear energy and facilitation of nuclear technology transfer to the country.”

“Iran, while continuing its strict adherence to international commitments under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, will strive for using peaceful nuclear energy in all of its fields such as medicine, agriculture, industry and electricity,” he said.

According to Jahangiri, the investment for the construction of the two new power-generating units is worth 10 billion US dollars and will be completed in ten years.

Jahangiri, while pointing to the ongoing deliveries of Russia’s S-300 air defense systems to Iran, further maintained that the Islamic Republic seeks to improve cooperation with Russia in the military industry as well as in combating terrorism.
