Syria calls on UN to condemn terrorist attacks in Aleppo

DAMASCUS, Jul. 10 (MNA) – Syria stressed that the continuing terrorist attacks on residential neighborhoods in Aleppo city is proof of the hypocrisy of the countries that claim to be combating terrorism, and also constitute evidence of the lack of seriousness of countries such as France and Britain in combating terrorism.

In two identical letters sent by the Syrian Foreign and Expatriates Ministry on Saturday to the UN Secretary-General and the head of the Security Council, the Ministry said "in continuation of the policies of destruction and hatred which are sponsored by specific countries and regimes including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Turkey, the armed terrorist groups which are supported and funded by external sides continued targeting the residential neighborhoods in Aleppo city with various explosive and rocket shells and "hellfire cannon" shells which consist of weaponized gas cylinders in an arbitrary manner without any consideration for the sanctity of Eid al-Fitr holiday in blatant violations of the truce agreements and the cessation of hostilities," noting that according to Hmeimeem Center, these violations numbered 762 since the end of February and up until now.

The Ministry said that it has been noticed recently that the armed terrorist groups are using new arms and ammunition, including new types of rockets and explosive shells with high precision and considerable explosive capabilities, in addition to advanced rocket launchers and cluster bombs, which indicates that specific countries such as Turkey and Saudi Arabia supply advanced arms to these groups with the blessing of Western states.

The Foreign and Expatriates Ministry pointed out that during the three days of Eid al-Fitr holiday, 40 civilians (17 children, 15 women and 8 men) were killed, and 170 others were injured including 46 children, 46 women, and 78 men, while the targeted areas suffered considerable material damage to private and public properties.

The Ministry elaborated by saying that on Friday July 8th, terrorists fired dozens of rocket and explosive shells on the neighborhoods of al-Furqan and al-Qabed in Aleppo, with the biggest casualties being reported at the university campus where around 3,700 displaced persons are staying, adding that the shells injured children who were out playing in celebration of the holiday, and that the shelling also reached the municipal stadium in the center of Aleppo.

The letters also noted that the terrorists fired rocket shells in an arbitrary manner on Thursday July 7th on Saif al-Dawla neighborhood, as well as the neighborhoods of al-Sabeel, al-Nayyal, al-Aziziye, and al-Masharqa.

The Ministry said that the persistence of these terrorists attacks which are carried out by what some like to call "moderate opposition groups" such as the terrorist organizations Jabhar al-Nusra, Jaish al-Fateh, and Jaish al-Islam among other groups affiliated or linked to ISIS and Al Qaeda, shows the depth of the hypocrisy of the states that claim to be fighting terrorism, as well as being evidence of the lack of seriousness of countries such as France, Britain, and the United States – the three of them permanent Security Council members - in combating terrorism, in addition to showing the double standards employed by these states when it comes to the war on terrorism.

The letters said that these cowardly terrorist acts that target innocent civilians in their homes, markets, and work places are regrettably protected by Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey, France, Britain, and the United States, with these states and regimes providing terrorist groups with funds, weapons, munitions, equipment, and recruits, with some providing the terrorists with safe havens, particularly Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Israel, adding that in the end, those who are stoking the fires of terrorism are bound to be burned by it.

The Ministry said that the negligence of some Security Council Members in fulfilling their duties in combating terrorism and the persistence of the Security Council in refusing to take deterrent and punitive measures against the states and regimes that support and sponsor terrorism openly encourages terrorists to go too far in their terrorist acts and to commit massacres against Syrians, adding that the refusal of the US, France, Britain, and Ukraine to list Jaish al-Islam and Ahrar al-Cham among terror organizations shows their lack of seriousness in fighting terrorism.

The letters said that the massacres, crimes, and devastation caused by terrorists and their sponsors will not dissuade the Syrian government from fighting terrorism and from realizing a political solution for the crisis via an intra-Syrian dialogue, nor will they dissuade the government from rebuilding what the terrorists and their accomplices and supporters have destroyed and from restoring security and stability to the Syrians.

The letters concluded by demanding that the Security Council and the UN Secretary-General condemn the aforementioned terrorist crimes immediately, and by demanding that the Security Council shoulder its responsibilities by taking punitive measures against the states and regimes that support and fund terrorism, particularly the regimes of Riyadh, Doha, and Ankara.
