Iran welcomes Canada’s stance on reconsidering ties

TEHRAN, Mar. 16 (MNA) – Iranian FM spokesman said Iran holds a positive view towards new position of the Canadian government on returning to normal diplomatic relations.

In response to a question on the recent comments made by new Canadian PM Justin Trudeau on taking up new policies in the Middle East and improving relations with Iran, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hossein Jaberi Ansari said “Upon taking the office, Canada’s new government has announced positions and statements on its international and regional approach which suggest a change from those of the previous government.”

“If the new approach comes along with a more realistic look to regional, international and bilateral issues, we could be optimistic about the future of the relations,” he added.

Jaberi Ansari further stated “with regard to relations with Iran, Canada has led a unilateral suspension of ties with the current state of relations being the direct result of irrational positions taken by their previous government.”

“We believe the Canadian government should prove in practice that they seek to establish equal relations based on respect and non-interference in internal affairs as well as on mutual benefit,” concluded the official.
