Rouhani calls on Saudi to amend past mistakes

TEHRAN, Jan. 06 (MNA) – Iran’s President Rouhani has called on Saudi Arabia to compensate for its past mistakes and return from its wrong and futile path of escalating tension in the region.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani made the remark at the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, adding “the Islamic countries and all libertarians in the world have become deeply affected by Saudi’s recent measure [in executing Sheikh Nimr] and have strongly condemned it.”

The President once again deemed the attack on Saudi diplomatic buildings in Tehran and Mashahd ‘wrong and unlawful’, calling on the ministries of Intelligence and Interior to take decisive measures concerning the officials who might have failed in their duties to manage the rally.

“Diplomatic buildings and guests are legally and internationally under protection and attacking these buildings are against the law, and is considered an attack on the reputation of the Islamic Republic,” said Rouhani.

The President went on to refer to the friendly relations between Iran and Saudi nations, adding “regrettably, the Saudi government despite being an Islamic country, has been for long attempting to create and intensify conflicts between Shias and Sunnis and propagandize an Iranophobic agenda among the world’s public opinion.”

President Rouhani then noted the financial and military support of regional terrorism as well as missile and airstrike attacks by the Saudi regime against the innocent people of Yemen, as well as throwing hurdles in the way of victories for Iraqi and Syrian governments; “all these measures have been taken with an aim to create further gaps between Shias and Sunnis and escalate tension in the region,” he added.

Saudi’s aim for cutting diplomatic ties with Iran and pressuring other countries to do the same is to undermine peace, stability and security in the region, Rouhani said.

He went on to add that the Saudi regime intends to cover up its domestic issues and recent defeats in the region, as well as exerting pressure on Iran, saying Saudi government’s regional policies have been moving toward aggression, spreading terrorism and destabilizing the region.

“The plans and objectives of the Islamic Republic of Iran with its great civilization and power in the region will not be affected by childish decisions of some novices in a certain government,” he stressed.

The President then called on Saudi Arabia to compensate for its past mistakes and return from its wrong and futile path, adding “stability, security, serious fight against terrorism and maintaining friendly ties with all regional countries are the main objectives of the Islamic Republic.”
