Saudis urged to determine Roknabadi’s status

TEHRAN, Nov. 06 (MNA) – Deputy FM for consular affairs has announced the ministry’s official note to Saudi authorities to determine the status of former Iranian ambassador to Lebanon.

Noting that 40 days have passed since Mina incident took place with some Iranian pilgrims including Ghazanfar Roknabadi still missing, Hassan Ghashghavi said, “we have demanded Saudis to deliver dead bodies of the victims; else, other possibilities will remain open.”

“The head of Iran's Hajj and Pilgrimage Organization Saeid Ouhadi traveled to Saudi Arabia to pursue the matter seriously together with Iran’s consul there while no possibility can be considered as definite,” he added.

Deputy foreign minister reiterated that, “we have sent a formal note to Saudi officials to immediately determine the status of Ghazanfar Roknabadi.”

On the strategy of some Saudi media during the first few days after the tragedy who denied the presence of Roknabadi in Hajj ceremony, Ghashghavi noted, “during the talks with Saudis, they referred to ‘media speculation’ arguing that rumors on the issue are mutually spread by Iranian and Arab media.”

“It is natural for Iranian media to track details of the incident till the Saudi side announces the status of missing people including Roknabadi,” reacted the official stressing reliance on facts rather than rumors.

Iran’s deputy foreign minister further announced the holding of a meeting with legal experts to investigate legal pursuit of Mina tragedy.
