Russian defense minister arrives in Tehran

TEHRAN, Jan. 20 (MNA) – Russian Defense Minister has arrived in Iran on an official visit for signing a military cooperation agreement.

Heading a high-ranking delegation, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu arrived in Tehran late on Monday to sign a military cooperation agreement with Iran.

The Russian minister was welcomed at the airport by the Iranian Deputy Defense Minister for International Affairs Brigadier General Firouz Masihpour.

The Russia's Sergey Shoigu will meet with senior Iranian officials to discuss ways of expanding military cooperation as well as issues of regional and international significance.

Previously, Shoigu and Dehqan had met on the sidelines of the third Moscow conference on international security in May 2014. They noted the need for expansion of defense cooperation, which, Shoigu said, 'has always been of importance' to bilateral relations.

The Russian minister is visiting Iran upon the invitation from his Iranian counterpart Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan. Iranian Defense Minister Dehqan, for his part, said Tehran was interested in “boosting cooperation with Russia to a new level.”
