Jack Straw who leads a parliamentary delegation to Tehran said that Iran and Britain relations had experienced fluctuations; however, he believed that both sides attempted to improve relations according to mutual interests, where Parliaments wield a key role.
Parliaments Press House announced that Jack Straw had met with head and the members of Iran-British parliamentary friendship group on Tuesday. The head of British delegation of four MPs, Jack Straw praised Iran as having a rich culture and civilization, and expressed satisfaction to visit Iran. “This is a reality that our relations fluctuated; but what matters here is that both sides, aided by their parliaments, attempt to improve relations according to mutual interests,” he asserted.
“Iran-British parliamentary friendship group has always called for improvements of ties and opposed the extremist positions toward extending Iran’s relations with the West,” Straw said. He also emphasized on Iran’s undeniable right to peaceful nuclear technology. “I am optimistic about the implementation of Joint Plan of Action worked out in Geneva,” he added.
Lord Norman Lamont, another member of the delegation, said that Iran should work to reinstate the trust and transparency for a total elimination of sanctions. “Iran has recently taken significant steps,” he said.
Ben Wallace, another delegation member, pointed to Iran’s important role in Syrian crisis and its presence in Geneva-2 on Syria. “The majority of the British MPs clearly demand that Iran participate in Geneva-2, believing that Iran deserves to help restore peace in Syria,” Wallace said.
Jeremy Corbyn from Labor Party and an anti-war activist believed that Iran’s role in the international politics was ignored and some attempts to isolate Iran would not help solve any issue in the region.
Jack Straw invited Iran’s Parliamentary delegation for a formal visit to London.
