Iran deputy FM meets with OPCW director-general

TEHRAN, Dec. 2 (MNA) – Iran’s FM deputy has met with director-general of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons in Hague.

Mehr News reported that Abbas Araqchi who is in Hague to participate in 18th international annual conference of OPCW member states, met with Director-General Ahmet Üzümcü.

In the meeting, Kazem Gharib Abadi, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the OPCW also attended. The director-general pointed to Iran’s continuous cooperation with OPCW and appreciated Iran’s positive and constructive approach to the Convention of Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. “Iran is an effective and very active member of the organization,” he added.

Araqchi congratulated Mr. director-general on winning Nobel Peace Prize. “The Islamic Republic of Iran is committed to its obligations under the Convention and as the greatest victim of chemical weapons, it has always demanded a world free of the threat of production and use of any weapons of mass destruction including chemical weapons,” he added.

He also welcomed Syrian approach to join the Convention and cooperation with the OPCW, expressing hope that other non-members such as Israel join the organization and destroy its chemical weapons stockpiles.

Araqchi also highlighted the international cooperation to facilitate using peaceful applications of chemicals and eliminating illegal barriers in this way. He also demanded more international attentions to needs and problems of chemical weapons victims.

18th annual conference of OPWC member states has been opened in Netherland’s Hague December 2 and will continue for 5 days. A delegation from Iran has also attended the conference.
