Iran and Oman sign two cooperation agreements

TEHRAN, Oct.6 (MNA) -— In the first day of President Mohammad Khatami’s visit to Oman, Iranian and Omani officials in Masqat signed two agreements on boosting trade and tourism between the two countries.

The agreement on avoiding double taxation and a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on tourism were signed Wednesday by Isha’q Jahangiri, Iran’s Minister of Industries and Mines, the Iranian chairman of the Iran–Oman Joint Economic Commission, and Maqbul bin Ali bin Sultan, Oman’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce, Industry, and Minerals, IRNA said.

 

Jahangiri put the trade volume between the two countries in the year to March 2004, at about 500 million dollars and said, “Some 450 million dollars of the amount belongs to the goods which are re-exported to Iran that is usually carried out through unofficial channels”. However, he added, the remaining 50 million dollars belong to the merchandise exported to Iran through official channels.

 

Elaborating on the agreement on avoiding double taxation, Jahangiri referred to the pact as a basic and significant document signed between the two countries that would facilitates economic cooperation between Iran and Oman adding, the accord exempts investors from having to pay taxes for the second time.

 

Khatami, accompanied by a high-ranking delegation, arrived in the Omani capital Muscat, on Wednesday on the last leg of his three-nation tour.
