Iran and Italy; a refugee situation perspective

TEHRAN, Dec. 20(MNA) – While the Head of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) appreciated Iran for providing refugees with different services, the Amnesty International lashed Italy for abusing immigrant workers with difficult jobs and low wages.

According to reports by United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Iran is one of the world’s most immigrant-friendly countries. Statistics indicate that Iran has been home to more than one million Afghan and about 42 thousand Iraqi refugees.

According to the law, all refugees are entitled to receive social, health, educational, etc. services. “The Islamic Republic of Iran has provided refugees with every services and we thank them for it,” Bernard Doyle, UNHCR representative had recently stated.

He also described Iranian health insurance for the refugees as ‘exemplary’ in the world.

In addition to public services, the Islamic Republic of Iran has provided refugees with opportunities for basic and academic education. Currently about 4000 Afghan students are studying at Iranian universities.

The Office of the Head of the UNHCR also added: “Education is the most important gift an Afghan refugee may take home, a gift which Iran is providing”, appreciating Iran for related measures.

As Swiss daily Neue Zürcher Zeitung reported, Amnesty International blasted Italy for working conditions of refugees from outside Europe in a report today. “In Italy refugees and foreigners work legally or illegally, especially in agriculture, tourism, and construction sectors. Rather than a residence permit, the immigrants need a job contract. Thus, in Italy immigrants often have to take on difficult working conditions to get resident permits for themselves and their families.
