Arrest of Hamas politician indicates Israel’s desperation: Larijani

TEHRAN, Jan. 24 (MNA) - In a statement issued on Sunday, Iranian Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani strongly condemned the arrest of Hamas politician Aziz Dweik, the speaker of the Palestinian Legislative Council, saying his arrest shows the Israelis’ desperation.

Following is the text of Larijani’s statement:

The Majlis strongly condemns the arrest of Mr. Aziz Dweik, the speaker of the Palestinian Legislative Council, by the Zionist regime and regards it as a new instance of the regime’s acts of occupation and inhumane actions and as a proof of the inhumane and occupying nature of the Zionist regime. It is not long since Mr. Aziz Dweik was freed from the Zionist regimes’ prison, but the regime arrested him once again in contravention of international regulations and commitments.

I am certain that the resistance and persistence of the strong Palestinian nation in the face of the inhumane and expansionist policies of the Zionists’ will once again show this regime’s desperation and weakness to carry out its evil plots against the Palestinians.

Therefore, the representatives of the Majlis call on their counterparts at the parliaments in independent and justice-seeking countries in the world, the Asian Parliamentary Assembly, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, and the Inter-Parliamentary Union to take a similar measure to make their voice of protest heard at international forums, calls for the immediate and unconditional release of Mr. Aziz Dweik, the speaker of the Palestinian Legislative Council, and take the measures necessary to prevent the continuation of the Zionists’ infringement on the legitimate rights of the Palestinian nation, its legitimate government, and the legislative council.
