IAEA confirms Iran has installed second-generation centrifuges

In a report issued Friday, the International Atomic Energy Agency said Iran has begun deploying second-generation centrifuges at uranium-enrichment facility at Natanz, which could allow the country to produce nuclear fuel at three times its current rate.

According to the UN nuclear watchdog, Iran has concurrently begun installing centrifuge machines at the Fordo site.

Iran's nuclear activities are constantly monitored by the IAEA.

The agency also confirmed recent statements by Iranian officials that Tehran had begun deploying more advanced centrifuges at the Natanz facility, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The IAEA said its inspectors confirmed that newer machines, called the IR-2m and the IR-4, have been installed at Natanz.

It also reported that Iran had begun installing centrifuges to produce higher-enriched uranium at the Fordo facility.

Iran is producing uranium to a purity of 20 percent to operate its medical reactors which produces radioisotopes for cancer patients.

Recently, the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) chief announced that production of 20%-enriched uranium would be transferred to Fordo and triple output.
