Iran-Iraq border security improving: border commander

KERMANSHAH, Iran, Jan. 20 (MNA) – Iran’s border commander, Hossein Zolfaqari, announced in the western city of Kermanshah on Wednesday that the Iran-Iraq border security is improving.

The remarks by the commander came as Iranian and Iraqi border guards held a meeting in the border city of Qasr Shirin on Monday to clear up misunderstanding over border demarcation.

Iranian and Iraqi border commanders were also present in the meeting.

The signs marking borders have been erased in some points during the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war which need to be repaired.

The basis for demarcating borders was based on the 1975 Algiers Agreement signed between Iran and Iraq.

“We seek a complete implementation of international treaties in regard to border demarcation between Iran and Iraq which was also insisted by the Iraqi side,” Zolfaqari told reporters.

In the meeting it was agreed that the two countries’ expert committees to restart their efforts as border demarcations need reexaminations based on the international treaties.
