Government Buys 90,000 Tons of Wheat from Farmers

TEHRAN Dec. 13 (Mehr News Agency) – During the current Iranian year (ending March 20, 2004), Iranian wheat producers have sold some 90 thousand tons of their products to the Government, Deputy Minister of Agricultural-Jihad for Farming Affairs said here Saturday.

“The amount shows 30% growth compared with the corresponding period last year,” Delavar Heydarpur added. Figures suggest that about 3.3 million tons of paddies have been produced this year, of which more than 1.1 million tons of rice are estimated to be taken out.

 

The Commerce Ministry has already announced a 40kg per capita as the national rice consumption range, Heydarpur stated, saying, “However, we suppose that the real figure stands at 35kg.”

 

Meanwhile, he added that some 550,000 tons of rice have been imported to Iran since the beginning of the year for the produced volume was less than what the experts had predicted.

 

The government should continue buying agricultural products from all the farmers, Heydarpur stated, acknowledging the Commerce Ministry’s noticeable movements in this field.

 

The Iranian government has already yielded a huge non-repayable financial aid (70% of the whole) to the process of equipping and renovating process in the country’s farms. “It will help us achieve self-sufficiency in agricultural production,” Heydarpur uttered.
