Israel’s Gaza defeat will alter Middle East equations: Rohani

TEHRAN, Jan. 19 (MNA) – Israel’s defeat in the Gaza conflict will significantly alter “the Middle East equations”, Expediency Council Strategic Research Center Director Hassan Rohani stated here on Tuesday.

He made the remarks in a conference on the international and legal dimensions of Israel’s aggression against the Gaza Strip.

He said the Zionist regime hates the people of Gaza greatly.

Citing an example, Rohani said Israel’s former prime minister Yitzhak Rabin had once said he wished he could one day wake up to see that the Gaza Strip had drowned into the sea.

He said the world has now become fully aware of the Zionist regime’s crimes and savagery in the Gaza war.

Hamas has now learnt its lessons from the six-month truce with Israel when the Zionist regime assassinated Hamas leaders and turned the Gaza Strip into a “large life prison”.

Rohani added that a “permanent ceasefire” is essential in the region and that Israel must remove the Gaza blockade.

Israel’s attacks on the Gaza Strip came amid Christmas holidays, when the new U.S. administration had not taken office yet, he explained.

And thus Zionist officials thought it was the ideal time and “reassured some Arab states” that Israel can eliminate Hamas within four days, he added.

But yet this was another miscalculation on the part of Israel since it could not make up for its humiliating defeat in the war against Lebanon in 2006, Rohani explained.

He called on the international legal bodies to prosecute Israel for war crimes.

The former national security chief also warned that those Arab countries who took a soft approach toward Israel in the recent conflict must be aware that the Palestinian nation would not let them go unpunished.
