Iranian theater was in limelight in Edinburgh: director

TEHRAN, Sep. 5 (MNA) -- Iran’s theater was in the limelight during the Edinburgh Festival, Iranian stage director Kiumars Moradi told ISNA.

Moradi, who attended Britain’s Visiting Arts Institute workshops on Iran on the sidelines of the festival, said that the workshops aimed to expand cultural ties between Iran’s theater and that of other countries’.

The visiting Arts Institute held a workshop on Iran’s theater, to provide information on Iranian theater in order to strengthen intercultural dialogue and understanding, and to create opportunities for artists to explore new connections, he mentioned.

 

Street and stage theaters, comedy, dance and physical theater were performed at the gala. The plays were staged at the main part of the festival and at the Edfringe (Edinburgh Festival Fringe), he said.

 

He went on to say that over 2700 plays were performed at the festival that were warmly welcomed by millions of tourists.

 

Cosponsored by the Visiting Arts and the British Council, Atila pesyani’s “Devil’s Ship,” which was staged during the festival, was warmly welcomed by the audience, he added.

 

The play was first seen at the Fajr International Theatre Festival in Tehran early this year and this Festival 2008 appearance marks its European premier.

 

Abbas Kiarostami’s video installation “Looking at Tazieh” was also showcased during the festival.

 

Cosponsored by the Visiting Arts and the British Council, “Looking at Tazieh” is a video installation with separate screens simultaneously showing three perspectives of a Tazieh (Iranian Passion play) performances and the audience.

 

Screening at the Edfringe, “Plastic” by Arvand Dashtaray and Sara Reihani was also welcomed by the audience, he mentioned.

 

Kiumars Moradi and his Iranian troupe will head to Spain to participate at the Barcelona International Theater Schools Festival, which will be held from September 22 to 27 in Madrid.

 

They will perform “Electra” which is a modern adaptation of the Greek tragedy at the festival.
