Iran condemns US attack on Lamerd sports hall 'as war crime'

TEHRAN, Apr. 02 (MNA) – Denouncing the recent US missile strike on a sports hall in Iran’s southern city of Lamerd, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman termed it a deliberate attack on civilians and a blatant war crime.

Referring to the recent US war crime in attacking a sports stadium in Lamerd city, Fars province, which was launched using a new type of ballistic missile (PrSM) and resulted in the martyrdom of 21 teenage athletes, Esmaeil Baghaei in a post on his X account wrote, “The American new PrSM missile, which made its combat debut on 28 February 2026, struck a crowded sports hall filled with innocent teenagers in the city of Lamerd, Fars Province. The attack killed 21 young boys and girls. The missile explodes above its target, dispersing thousands of lethal fragments (tungsten pellets) to maximize human casualties.”

“This is a despicable war crime. As the Syrian poet Ghada al-Samman once wrote, ‘They keep talking and never fall silent for even a moment—perhaps this endless chatter comes from their fear of hearing the voice of their own conscience’,” he added.

The US and the Israeli regime launched a large-scale unprovoked military campaign against Iran on February 28, which led to the assassination of Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, along with several senior military commanders and civilians.
