Red Cross teams in Gaza received two coffins containing the bodies of Israeli captives on Saturday before transferring them to Israeli army forces inside the enclave, according to a statement from the Israeli military.
“According to information provided by the Red Cross, two coffins of deceased hostages have been transferred into their custody and are on their way to IDF and ISA forces in the Gaza Strip,” the army said, according to Al Jazeera.
Israel’s Channel 12 later confirmed that the army had received the bodies from the Red Cross.
Under the ceasefire agreement, Hamas released 20 living Israeli captives and handed over the remains of 13 others in exchange for nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, many of whom had been held without charge by the occupying regime.
The deal, reached last week through indirect talks, is based on a phased plan introduced by US President Donald Trump. The first phase involved the exchange of detainees, while later stages outline reconstruction efforts in Gaza and the creation of a new administrative structure—an approach widely viewed by Palestinians as an attempt to impose foreign control over the besieged territory.
Since October 2023, the Israeli regime’s relentless assault on Gaza has left more than 68,100 people dead and 170,200 wounded, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. The staggering toll underscores the scale of devastation inflicted by the ongoing campaign, which continues to draw global condemnation for its war crimes and collective punishment of civilians.
