No nuclear talks with U.S.: Haddad-Adel

TEHRAN, May 23 (MNA) -- Majlis speaker said on Wednesday that Iran will negotiate with the United States only to help establish security in Iraq and there will be no talk of Iranian nuclear issue.

“Our clear message to the U.S., EU, and the entire world is that we want to use nuclear energy peacefully” and will not divert toward producing nuclear weapons, Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel told reporters at his biweekly press briefing.

Iranian and U.S. diplomats will meet on May 28 to discuss the security situation in Iraq at the ambassadorial level.

The speaker said talks with the U.S. on security situation in Iraq, as an important neighboring country, is an Islamic and humanitarian duty, he said.

Asked about the statements of some MPs about forming an Iran-U.S. parliamentary friendship group, the Majlis speaker said that the issue was not serious and certain legislators believed that it was a proper way of informing the U.S. about Iran’s views; however, he said, they realized that their approach was not measured.

“This act was not the parliament’s decision; talks with the U.S. will be meaningful and effective only when we feel it wants to change its behavior,” he added.

If the U.S. Congressmen want to open a door to understanding they can cancel the D’Amato law which is against Iran, he suggested, adding, “The way of showing goodwill is very clear.”

Speaker backs interest rate cuts

The Majlis speaker said he supports a decision by the government to lower interest rates.

This decision is in line with the fourth five-year socioeconomic development plan (2005-2010) even though some ambiguities may be brought about due to complexity of the matter, he stated.

According to the Majlis approval the government must undertake to slash interest rates to single digit piecemeal.

However, he stressed the cut will not necessarily lead to success unless it is measured with other parameters.

The interest rates cut might result in a drop in production expenses and inflation, the Majlis speaker noted.
