Early results show Modi’s BJP may fall short of majority

TEHRAN, Jun. 04 (MNA) – Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led coalition is leading as India counts votes. But trends so far suggest the BJP might fall short of a majority.

With hundreds of millions of votes already counted, the ruling BJP is comfortably India’s largest party — but well short of the 272 seat majority mark on its own, and far below the numbers it was projected to win in exit polls.

The opposition parties are faring better than the exit polls predicted on Saturday.

The Congress, the main opposition party, is hovering around 100 seats: It won just 44 seats in 2014 and 52 in 2019, and even 100 seats would represent a significant gain for India’s Grand Old Party.
