Iran FM urges for promoting cooperation, peace in Caucasus

TEHRAN, Oct. 23 (MNA) – "With the war over in South Caucasus, now the time is ripe for promotion of peace and cooperation," according to the Iranian foreign minister in the meeting of the foreign ministers of 3+3 Format.

The first 3+3 Format meeting at the level of foreign ministers kicked off in Tehran on Monday afternoon.

The foreign ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Armenia and Turkey as well as Russia were hosted by their Iranian counterpart in Tehran to discuss peace in the south of Caucasus region. 

"Sergey Lavrov", "Hakan Fidan", "Jeyhun Bayramov" and "Ararat Mirzoyan" the foreign ministers of Russia, Turkey, Azerbaijan and Armenia hosted by "Hossein Amir-Abdollahian" in Tehran in order to discuss the regional peace in the Caucasus through regional mechanisms after the end of the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Addressing the meeting, the Iranian foreign minister said that today there is an opportunity to promote peace and cooperation in the Caucasus.

"We are here today to play a role in promoting peace and cooperation in the south of the Caucasus and building ways to strengthen regional integration and its prosperity. We support the peace negotiations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Armenia and consider the mutual recognition of territorial integrity by the two countries as a constructive step to reach a peace agreement. Likewise, we consider Armenia's action in specifying the recognition of Karabakh as part of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the restoration of Azerbaijan's sovereignty over this region, as well as Azerbaijan's emphasis on ensuring the security and rights of its residents as important developments in the peace negotiations," the top Iranian diplomat said.

He added that achieving peace in the region has such requirements such as respecting the territorial integrity of others, and using a language of peace and talks.

Amir-Abdollahian further called for expanding trade, energy cooperation and developing transit routes in the region to maximize the interests of the region's nations.
