Guterres believes in JCPOA, preserving it: his spokesman

TEHRAN, Jun. 19 (MNA) – António Guterres believes that JCPOA is an important achievement and efforts to save it should continue, said Spokesman for the Secretary-General Stéphane Dujarric while briefing the press on Monday.

“As you know, the Reuters released the news about the Secretary‑General's report on [resolution] 2231 (2015) … Could you explain his view about the Trump decision about to veto the JCPOA [Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action] as part of this resolution?” IRNA correspondent asked.

“The report apparently was leaked,” said Dujarric in response, adding, “I have no comment on the content of the report, which will be made public soon.  As far as the Secretary‑General's position on the JCPOA, his position is unchanged, that he believes that the JCPOA was a very important achievement, and everything should be done to try to preserve its gains.”

“Has he confirmed the veto of the JCPOA is a violation of [resolution] 2231 (2015)?” the correspondent framed.

“I think I will encourage you to wait for the report if that is, in fact, covered in the report,” the spokesman answered.

According to United Nation’s official website, on 20 July 2015, the Security Council unanimously adopted resolution 2231 (2015) endorsing the JCPOA. The Security Council affirmed that conclusion of the JCPOA marked a fundamental shift in its consideration of the Iranian nuclear issue, expressed its desire to build a new relationship with Iran strengthened by the implementation of the JCPOA and to bring to a satisfactory conclusion its consideration of this matter.

The Security Council further affirmed that full implementation of the JCPOA would contribute to building confidence in the exclusively peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear programme and emphasized that the JCPOA is conducive to promoting and facilitating the development of normal economic and trade contacts and cooperation with Iran.

As requested by the Security Council, the Secretary-General reports to the Council every six months on the implementation of the provisions of resolution 2231 (2015).
