Iran opens FIBA U19 World Cup with loss

TEHRAN, Jul. 02 (MNA) – National Iranian junior basketball team conceded a defeat against title-defender USA in opening debut of 2017 FIBA Under-19 Basketball World Cup.

The 13th edition of the prestigious international basketball tournament was launched on Saturday June 01 in Cairo, Egypt with participation of 16 teams who will compete until July 09.

The Iranian squad began the tournament with a 48-108 loss against US rivals. Persian basketball players were overcome in all four quarters of the match with set results being 6-18, 18-26, 13-30 and 11-32.

The US team, who is defending its 2016 title in the FIBA Under-19 Basketball World Cup, has previously won 6 titles of the event and collected three silver medals.

Basketball outfit of Iran had secured a spot in the international tournament by finishing first in the 7th edition of the West Asia Basketball Association (WABA) Junior Championship.

Young basketball players of Iran are scheduled to take up Angola in their second Group D encounter of the sportive event.
