FM offers condolences over soccer legend’s death

TEHRAN, Nov. 04 (MNA) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry showed sympathies with all football players who mourn the death of the legendary player Mansour Pourheydari who passed away on Friday.

Bahram Ghasemi, the Spokesperson of Iran’s Foreign Ministry offered sympathies to all football lovers in Iran over the death of Iranian veteran football player, Mansour Pourheydari, who had won numerous trophies both as a player and manager in Iran and Asia.

Born on January 26, 1946, the legendary football player started his football career at Daraei FC, and later joined Esteghlal in 1965. With his club, Pourheydari won the Iranian top League (at that time called the First Division) two times and earned Asian Club Championship in 1970 before retiring and starting his career as a coach.

On the bench he garnered again two times the title of Iranian Football League in 1989–90 and 2000–01 seasons. He also led Esteghlal to the final of Asian Club Championship in 1991 and won along the blue giants the Asian honor.

As the head coach of the national football team of Iran, Team Melli, he claimed the title of the Asian Games in 1998. AFC announced him as the January 1999 Asian Coach of the Month.
