Emphasizing that urbanization has changed into a general norm, Dr. Hossein Mohammadpour Zarandi, president of Iran Urban Economics Scientific Association (IUESA) in a scientific forum on ‘investigating the capacities of CPI for Iran urban development’ said more than two-third of people in the world lived in villages in 1950s, but urbanization rate reached to 54 percent in 2015.
Saying that urban population reached from 0.7 billion people in 1950 to 4 billion people in 2014, he added intense competition between the countries in the world is going on in terms of urbanization so that 15 percent of countries had an urban population with more than 60 percent in the beginning of 1950s, but half of the world’s countries had an urban population with more than 60 percent in 2014.
The center of urbanization was North America and the Europe in the past, but urbanization is much more in developing countries. It is estimated that about 5 billion people will be added to the world population during 2014 to 2050 that 90 percent of them will live in Asia and Africa.
Stating that emphasis on sustainable development is undeniable necessity in the path of urban development, the president of IUESA said the main reason of tendency to sustainable development models has been scientific societies’ concern of increasing impacts of development on the world environment. Moreover, many urban development and planning schools including Modernism and Technocrats failed in solving the problems of cities.
Referring to the importance of CPI, lecturer of UN global initiative said City Prosperity Initiative is a comprehensive approach beyond sustainable development focusing on welfare, exhilaration, and improvement of urban quality of life.
Noting that it is necessary to finance CPI and create the CPI Global Fund Program, he said it prepares the ground to finance CPI and this fund provides a structure that CPI becomes operational.
In this step, banks and credit institutes enter into the transparent system of implementing projects. This fund is a program to create economic capacities for cities and it tries to perform theories of urban sustainable development through encouraging banks and credit institutes to participate in development projects.
Referring to Article 10 of Resistance Economy policies in line with purposeful support of exporting goods and services in accordance with VAT positive net foreign exchange, he added CPI can facilitate the path of absorbing foreign investment particularly in urban arena.
