Head of the Center for Strategic Research Ali Akbar Velayati made the comments on Monday evening at a meeting with Russia's special envoy on Syria Alexander Lavrentiev who made a one-day visit to Tehran to exchange views on regional issues with particular attention to Syria.
Speaking at the meeting, Velayati pointed to the importance that Iran attaches to strategic relations with Russia saying “strong and strategic ties between the two sides would lead to peace and stability in the region.”
The official pointed to Syrian issues and the importance of coordination between Iran and Russia noting “cooperation between Iran and Russia, as Syria’s main allies, has played an important role in regional developments and recent victories achieved by Syrian people and government.”
“A number of reactionary regional states and supporters of terrorist, extremist and Takfiri groups seek to create a way out for the defeated and fleeting groups,” underscored Velayating maintaining “with unbalanced negotiations, they seek to compensate for successive failures of terrorists.”
Any political dialogue on the future of Syria needs to have the consent of Syrians,” he concluded.
Alexander Lavrentiev, Special Representative of the Russian President, for his part, emphasized the need for long-term, strategic and immersive relations as regards regional and international issues as well as fighting terrorism.
